Spotlight on Research Associate Dr R. Sánchez-Rivera

Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Fellow funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge. I completed my Ph.D. in the Centre of Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge in December 2019. My areas of expertise are in critical race theory, the critical study of eugenics and scientific racism, historical sociology, and the sociology of health and illness with a focus on reproduction, decolonial theory, gender studies, queer theory, and social inequalities. I will be undertaking a four-year Research Fellowship at Gonville & Caius from October 2021.

We would like to congratulate ReproSoc Director, Professor Sarah Franklin , who has been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the SHAPE subjects (the social sciences, humanities and the arts) for her work on the forms of social change associated with the introduction of IVF and other reproductive technologies.

The second Anne McLaren Symposium was held online on Tuesday 23 March 2021. It followed a successful meeting held last December at the Wellcome Trust and adopted the same format. The theme for this second meeting again emphasised translational bioscience in its widest sense, this time with a focus on synthetic gametes, and once again drawing on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives.

A discussion between Pascha Bueno-Hansen, Vanesa Giraldo Gärtner & Tatiana Sanchez Parra, chaired by Dr Julieta Chaparro-Buitrago, ReproSoc. Panel description: This exciting panel discussion had reproduction and sexuality at its center to understand how they have animated recent political debates and transitions (Briggs, 2017) in Latin America. Looking at the pre-post conflict state (Theidon 2007) in Colombia and Peru, the participants in this round table reflected on the conflicting implications of reproduction and sexuality in transitional justice, the functioning of the law, and violence.

It had been clear throughout my 15 years as a queer parent that genetics is less a fact of biology and more a state-driven project for constructing (worthy) citizens through and productive of acceptable family forms. And yet the role and power of the border and its regulatory systems in constructing and maintaining (hetero) normative families had become painfully clear. Here, I bring the optic of structural intimacies to consider transnational LGBTQ kinship, considering how the border becomes a literal and figurative space for the re/production of (heterosexual, bio-genetic) family forms.
