ReproDoc Film Screening: Joanna Rajkowska’s Born in Berlin (2012)

followed by a discussion with Dr Matylda Szewczyk (University of Warsaw)

Friday 24 February 2023, 2-4pm
17 Mill Lane, Seminar Room B (first floor)

In this year’s ReproDoc, visiting scholar Matylda Szewczyk introduced us to the Polish artist’s Joanna Rajkowska project “Born in Berlin” (http://www.rajkowska.com/en/urodzona-w-berlinie/). Rajkowska’s idea was to go to Berlin and give birth to her daughter there, as a gift to the city and a way of answering to its historical trauma. During this session, the short film will be shown, and we will subsequently discuss the project’s premises and its outcome. During the ReproDoc we talked about about art in relation to pregnancy and reproductive work (including the history of birth films) and the notions of motherhood (and well as responsibility, identity, the social role) in contemporary culture.
